Selling children to finance retirement?

According to Megan Mcardle people are having less children because they know social security will take care of them in their declining years, and we all know the only reason to have kids is that they lead to economic benefits for the parents.  I cannot see any other reason to bring a bunch of poop flinging yard apes into my life, and thanks to social security I don’t have to. Just the fact that social security keeps people from having 12 kids is reason enough to make sure that it stays solvent no matter how high taxes have to go. Plus, if you are one of those people who for some bizzarre reason wants to have kids, at least thanks to social security you wont be a burden to them, and fortunately you will not have to live with them.  Trust me proud dads out there, your children don’t want to change your diapers in your declining years.

  1. how could a person who eschews children and population replacement deign to support an entitlement program dependent on what is meant to be eliminated.

this reminds me of Mevlin Udall’s literary technique of “taking away reason an accountability”.

  2. John Rove says:

I don’t think the earth or the US is in any danger of running out of people. It is silly to argue that people will stop reproducing if they don’t need children for retirment. I doubt that retirement planning enters into most peoples decision as whether or not to have children and if someone decides not to have children because they know social security will take care of them, maybe they should not have childeren anyways.

  3. No children paying into Soc Sec, no elderly collecting out of it. Take a stand, and call for it’s shutdown. Is there another logical conclusion that I’m missing?

I’m hoping not, as the leaders of this site have been very gracious hosts. Even if it was, hey it’s your site.
