(BostonGlobe) Asante Samuel: “I’m not coming to camp. I’m not showing up until the 10th week [of the season]. I feel unappreciated. The way they’re treating me is just wrong.” ~~ He added the ‘week 10’ thing, which is original. Will we have 3 first round picks for next year? I’d rather have Samuel locked up for 2-3 years, but as I explained earlier:
(Asante Samuel – 1/9/07) “There are plenty of them going here or there each offseason, but the “shut-down” cornerbacks in this league are few and far between. What results of course is maximum 7 year contracts with signing bonus cash entering the player’s bank account in 5 million dollar chunks or more on the first day of training camp. Asante Samuel has his eyes on just that heading into the divisional round of the playoffs. With 11 interceptions under his belt so far, the chances of a holdout…are probably higher than Samuel receiving that kind of a contract from Bill Belichick.“
Reports say he is looking for 8yrs/$80 and the Jets are one of suitors. Would Mangenious be willing to drop two first rounders for Asante? Maybe we will have to wait for the Sopranos finale to find out.
8 years! He’s going to get it from someone, that’s a lock, but never from us. I don’t think anyone on that team is worth an 8 year deal. What is really dangerous about that is, if the signing bonus is a 1/4 of the salary and he gets injured badly in the first couple years, then to cut him you’ve got to take an enormous cap hit that would pretty much kill an entire season.
8/80 is a hell of a contract…he’ll have to negotiate it and then we’d trade him. 2 first rounders is a STEEP price! But if that’s what a shut down corner (compared with a 1st for Branch, you might be on to something) is worth, then…HELL YEA!
Rooting against San Franscisco is something I’m already looking forward to. The gift that keeps on giving…they beat Denver in week 17 and then trade us their 1st round pick…damn it’s good to be a Pats fan!
i hate holdouts, javon walker in Green Bay vastly disappointed me when he did it. I know in his case, he got paid $3 million to not perform for a couple years until his breakout season. samuels states its business that he is holding out, if he was a smart business man, he would sign for the $7.9 million play great this year and cash in his chips. he would have more leverage and capital at the end of this season, if he gets hurt or wants to sit out the year after next, he still has the money to live on. too many prima donas get their head too big by an agent hoping to get a big commission at the expense of the player and the team.
With NE sometimes it seems like the system favors certain positions, I am sure that is what Belichick is thinking anyway. sort of like in Denver where it was assumed that any running back will do well. Maybe Belichick is right after all Trow Brown managed to look pretty good in the NE secondary maybe anyone can.
well here’s to hoping denver’s zone blocking scheme works in GB this year; although it didnt help ahman green at all, but he was never the same since he got hurt a couple years ago. i think the pats are the team to beat this year hands down, they finally get a receiving corps. i love maroney to death as well.
