Dingell’s Holiday Jingle

Congressman John D. Dingell (MI-15) recited the following poem on the floor of the US House of Representatives concerning House Resolution 579, which expressed the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected. “Preserving Christmas” has been a frequent topic for conservative talk show hosts, including Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly.

Twas the week before Christmas and all through the House
No bills were passed ‘bout which Fox News could grouse;
Tax cuts for the wealthy were passed with great cheer,
So vacations in St. Barts soon would be near;

Katrina kids were nestled all snug in motel beds,
While visions of school and home danced in their heads;
In Iraq our soldiers needed supplies and a plan,
Plus nuclear weapons were being built in Iran;

Gas prices shot up, consumer confidence fell;
Americans feared we were on a fast track to…well…
Wait— we need a distraction— something divisive and wily;
A fabrication straight from the mouth of O’Reilly

We can pretend that Christmas is under attack
Hold a vote to save it— then pat ourselves on the back;
Silent Night, First Noel, Away in the Manger
Wake up Congress, they’re in no danger!

This time of year we see Christmas every where we go,
From churches, to homes, to schools, and yes…even Costco;
What we have is an attempt to divide and destroy,
When this is the season to unite us with joy

At Christmas time we’re taught to unite,
We don’t need a made-up reason to fight
So on O’Reilly, on Hannity, on Coulter, and those right wing blogs;
You should just sit back, relax…have a few egg nogs!

‘Tis the holiday season: enjoy it a pinch
With all our real problems, do we honestly need another Grinch?

So to my friends and my colleagues I say with delight,
A merry Christmas to all,
and to Bill O’Reilly…Happy Holidays.

  2. Chris Austin says:

    Shame on FoxNews and the religious right! For veiling this great time of year with an unnessary fight. America’s built-in buzzkill!

  3. Paul says:

    Chris you have the “party line” down my friend. 🙂

  4. Chris Austin says:

    It’s all off the top of my head Paul. Not referring to anything when I write this.

    I should be a political advisor

  5. Paul says:

    Help Howard Dean! God knows he needs it !

    This guy reminds me of that Iraqi information minister trying to convince us something that goes completely against reality. While not really a war on Christmas but more a war on religion. Soon there will be a law banning religious symbols (maybe just Christian symbols) from within 500 feet of a school just like the gun law of the same description(which is also completely worthless).

    This Dingell guy must be a real liberal extremist to be so against religion and free press. Do I even have to bring up what would happen if this were a Republican writing a poem about the falacies of the “quagmire” in Iraq? Democrats aren’t known for their honesty, though.

  7. Frodo says:

    Understand that war is not an exact science if a science at all. But this does nothing to say we should have never gone in the first place. We seem to be good at the invasion part but for the aftermath part we have a lot to learn. Is Iraq a hopeless quagmire? I think not despite the medias attempts. We know of the good things happening there an in other areas of Middle East. We know about the changing public opinion in many Arab countires especially after the aid sent to the Sunami and earthquke ravenged countires and the continual attacks by Al Qaeda on the muslim people not only in Iraq but other Arab countires as well. 10 years from what will be written about this war? Before you answer think about the Civil War and the mood of the country right after it was over. How long did it take to get the country back on its feet? And yet the retracors of this war want instanmt success in Iraq. As if to say “OK all you Iraqi people just play nice now.” It will take time and that means our troops will be there for some time and more lives will be lost. But I would rather fight this fight with my Army and soemwhere else than the World Trade Center or some subway system.

    From the comments section at “Ace of Spades Blog”

    We are at war – mistakes will be made, people will be killed, the enemy will sometimes outsmart us, etc. I find this whole expectation that we should never suffer setbacks or make mistakes very annoying. I remember reading how during the Guadalcanal campaign Nimitz would constantly remind his gloomy subordinates that the enemy was suffereing and losing ships also.

    In his memoirs, Grant (when he was just a militia colonel) wrote about leading a regiment to attack a Confederate camp. He was scared and kept imagining everything that could go wrong. He was outnumbered, it was a trap, etc. He got to the camp and the Confederates had run away. He used that to remind himself that the enemy is also scared and also screws up.

    I forget which general said that you can not judge a battle by the rear area of your own army. There will always be wounded, confusion, people running away, etc. The media coverage now does this.

    I would also add the following to back up my points.

    Hurry back Chris, your tearing apart of my arguments is missed.

    I know … sick.

    What is so great for Republicans now is that the bar for success has been set so low by the liberals that just about anything positive coming out of next year will shine like a beacon. Just imaging if we find bin Laden, he is so a non-issue now but the liberals have played him up so much that it would be like finding the Holy Grail.

    All the media outlets and liberal senators are predicting America getting physically thrown out of Iraq in 6 months by the belt and collar. All Bush has to do is stay the course and history will view him as a master statesman.

    Oh, and most Americans probably care more for their own safety and well being than the right of foreign murderers to not have underwear put on their heads. Abu Gharib is one of many of the liberal tactics that will come back to haunt them in 06′.

  10. Paul says:

    Chris rest and recoup friend. God bless all Left/Liberals is my prayer as well as the rest of us ! 🙂
