If there was ever a Yankee I hated more than David Wells, I can’t think of who it was. Bucky Dent solidified his place as the most hated Yankee for those in my dad’s generation with his improbable home run in ’78, but I was still in diapers so that chapter of Sox lore is more like a cartoon to me. My time as a Yankee hater runs from around ’86 to the present. Alex Rodriguez is the frontrunner to carry the torch, but for many years, Wells was the number one villian in pinstripes.
This guy would take the ball in a big game, go seven plus, and leave the game with at least a 2 run lead every time. Andy Pettite always seemed to have a knack for killing my Sox as well, but knowing that Wells drank heavily and ate lots of cheeseburgers just made it worse. In a Red Sox uniform this season, he’s been the steadiest starter we’ve had. World Series ring in the bag already (maybe that’s the reason) I love this guy. Funny how sports can work like that, isn’t it?
I’m convinced that Bud Selig is an idiot, and have felt that way for years now. Wells is basically pissing on the guy’s face with these statements he’s been making…I have to admit that I’m enjoying this.
BOSTON — Red Sox left-hander David Wells was summoned to New York to discuss his criticism of baseball commissioner Bud Selig.
Wells’ agent, Gregg Clifton, was due to take an overnight flight to join Wells for a Wednesday meeting at the commissioner’s office that was not expected to include Selig.
Rich Levin, a Selig spokesman, said he had not heard anything about a meeting before he left the office Tuesday evening.
The meeting was first reported by The Boston Globe and was confirmed to The Associated Press by a person who helped arrange the session who spoke on condition he not be identified because of involvement.
Red Sox officials could not immediately be reached for comment, but on Monday they apologized to the commissioner and said Wells’ comments “do not in any way reflect the views of the club.”
Wells lashed out at Selig after losing his appeal of a six-game suspension on Monday, saying the commissioner “isn’t doing a thing” about steroids. The pitcher, who called Selig an “idiot” in a spring training interview with the Hartford Courant, accused Selig of retaliating for his past comments in handing out the latest suspension.
The boisterous lefty also claimed Selig withheld results of Rafael Palmeiro’s steroids test to avoid detracting from the Hall of Fame inductions.
“Mr. Wells’ statement that the discipline was delayed is pure fiction,” said Rob Manfred, baseball’s executive vice president of labor relations. “With respect to the larger issue of steroids, Mr. Wells is obviously unaware that commissioner Selig has proposed a tougher steroid policy for the industry and that such a policy can be imposed only through collective bargaining.”
Wells was notified that his appeal failed in a letter from the commissioner’s office, which he taped above his locker with the handwritten notation, “My Boy Bud!”
“I’m really holding back because I’ve got a lot of negative things to say,” he said. “I can’t wait to win the World Series and have Bud Selig come up there [with the trophy]. I really can’t. Who knows what will come out then.”
Selig does not like to hear the truth and will bully people to keep them quiet. Reminds of another guy, I just can’t remember what his name is.
Another similarity…Selig considers himself the best commissioner baseball as ever had and when anything goes wrong manages to blame everyone but himself.
Getting the Expos to DC was a great move…I don’t know why it took so long!
Selig is a car salesman, kind of slimy and sleazy which adds to baseballs quirkiness. For some reason I think Bush has a more important job, and his sleaziness does not add anything.
