Reflecting on Game 1

Matt Clement must have missed on his location at least 15 times. This guy can’t be trusted. Why Terry Francona had him pitching game one is a mystery to me. Honestly…and this is pretty evil (in a Seinfeld kind of way), when that come-backer hit him in the thigh, I was hoping it would knock him out of the game. Forget about the final score. If the pitcher on the mound put the ball where Varitek’s mitt was, the game would have been close. Game one of the playoffs is a situation for Wakefield or Wells – guys who have done it a number of times already in their careers. I’m disappointed in the decisionmaking. Looking forward, let’s get less of Kevin Millar and more of John Olerud.

I checked in during the first inning, and saw all I needed to see. Ugh.

As exciting as last weekend’s Sox-Yankees series was, I wish the Sox had wrapped up a playoff spot much, much earlier. Then we could’ve had someone else start Game 1, instead of having to shove Clement out there.

Who would’ve thunk it? The Chisox killed them Chris.

This thing is far from over. I’d take Wells over Burhle in a playoff game every day of the week.

Clement is just a guy with minimal tallent, who never should have been on the mound in that situation to begin with. On top of that…playing Kevin Millar when you could throw L-R-L-R-L-L-L-L up there (Damon/Edgar/Papi/Manny/TROT/TEK/OLERUD/MUELLER) against a righty we’ve owned in the past, is as dumb as it gets.

Not only is Olerud a tougher out than Millar, having four lefties in a row who can all hit from 5-8 is a blessing.

I’m sick of Francona’s loyalty to this guy putting us in a tougher position to win. Chicago’s got lefties in the bullpen – you can pinch hit Millar for Trot if you need to late in the game. Given a poorly located fastball, Millar can get around on one and do some damage.

Not to mention the fact that Olerud is 10 times the defensive 1B that Millar is.

Ultimately, it was Clement’s lack of control last night that lost the game for us. Nothing urks me more (having played catcher for 10 years growing up) than a major league pitcher who can’t hit location consistently. When the guy can’t hit the glove, all the preperation, all the scouting…it goes right out the window.
