A Sportsfan’s Dream – Weekend Weblog

Sox-Yankees x 2, Notre Dame-Michigan (on now), South Carolina-Georgia, Texas-Ohio State (the main attraction), Clemson-Maryland (on now), LSU-Arizona St, NFL Opening Sunday…as Al Bundy used to say, “Let’s Rock”!

I’m going to be updating this as the weekend progresses. My picks for tomorrow are on the way

12:10
Weis’s offense is chewing up Michigan so far. Every blitz has been recognized, handled and Quinn is picking up who’s open every time. It’s that moment right now that comes in so many college games, early on especially, when you wonder to yourself, “how does Michigan have a chance?” I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop with this first year for Weis and the Notre Dame offense, it this team just might be juggernaut. Seeing Wandstat’s Pitt team lose to Ohio on ESPN had me wondering whether he chose the wrong profession…but also whether last week’s rout was more about Pitt being bad/ND being good.

Why isn’t Notre Dame in the Big Ten??? The ACC’s gone the way of the SEC/Big 12 – it’s time for evolution to take hold of that conference and the most obvious way to do that is for the Irish to FINALLY get affiliated. Imagine a week of Big Ten, ACC, SEC and Big 12 championship games? OK, the boys are growing restless…

Manny took a Chacon inside fastball (had to have been a mistake) into the left field stands for a 2-0 Red Sox lead. The story of Curt Schilling arriving at the stadium and getting dressed at 8AM hits my ears and I’m cursed with another reason to not flip back to ND-Michigan. Schilling is like a WWF wrestler sometimes with stories like this. It’s like hearing Jake the Snake on a segment of Piper’s Pit declare to the world that Ravishing Rick Reed is a dead man in the next $50 pay per view event. 3 innings, 10 batters, the one that reached was an error.

Maryland’s in control right now in a game that means a lot more to me now that BC is part of the ACC. Their game versus Army is a farce, 30-7 at halftime. One of these damned commercials has that ‘I Could Do Anything For Love’ song by Meatloaf on it, and it’s been stuck in my head for two days already…Big Papi’s up with the bases juiced, only one out! Matsui drops a routine fly ball! Manny’s up with the bases still loaded, base hit to left, still loaded for Trot, two RBI single to left center, 7-0, Sammy on my knee…I hate that bullshit song! I remember watching MTV as a kid and changing the channel everytime it came on…but then again, last week I had ‘Unskinny Bop’ stuck in my head, pissed me off too, but I watched that video about 10,000 times voluntarily. Back in the good ol’ days, when the suits and spreadsheet junkies hadn’t yet infected EVERYTHING in American popular culture.

Clemson is taking this one back. The lead is down to three and running the ball well. Davis ran it down to about the ten, but it gets called back on a holding call, so they’re at the 50 with 4:26 left…Clemson in the past two years have won a ton of games in the waning moments, for all the BC fans out there taking notes. Merriweather runs it 40 yards and the comeback is 2:58 from being secured.

7:30
South Carolina just forced Georgia into a 3 and out in the first posession of the 2nd half, up 9-7 – Iowa St. rolled over 9 ranked Iowa – and Tulsa almost beat Oklahoma…God I love college football! It’s been a great day already and the best is yet to come with Ohio St-Texas coming up in an hour, and Arizona St @ LSU around 9 or so.

Important thing to consider for tonight’s game, as with practically all southern states along the gulf coast, Louisianna takes their football very seriously. I’ve been a huge LSU fan in recent years, and in spite of the fact that their opponent happens to be Tedy Bruschi’s alma mater, my heart’s with the Tigers tonight. Reports from campus indicate that a 10% increase in student population has forced students to live 4-5 to a room. The campus has something to cheer about for the first time in a while, as does the entire state. I hope the government had the foresight to ensure that those in shelters were able to see the game!

8:10
I’m rooting for OSU tonight because I can’t stand teams from Texas. The only one that makes me smile once in a while is the Spurs. They stole hockey from Minnesotta, brought fantasy basketball to Dallas (the owners of the Cowboys and Mavericks have a LOT in common) and produced George W. Bush Jr. King of the Hill is the best thing I can think of when it comes to Texas.

And on the other hand, I don’t like the Big 10 at all either. I’ll take a midlevel matchup in the Big 12 or SEC over Ohio State-Michigan every day of the week. Now that the ACC houses my BC Eagles, there’s really no reason to turn on the Big 10 at all this year as I see it. So it’s been really fun watching Michigan and Iowa go down today, but when faced with the question of ‘Texas or the Big 10’…the Big 10 wins.
